Subject: surf music 101
i have been a merman fan for years now. i caught them many years ago at a half moon bay chili cook-off (it might have been the 1st or 2nd one, of a now annual event). it was so friggin cold outside and there was jim jammin away to maybe 20 of us, outside, enduring the wind and fog on that june day. if you know half moon bay, there is not much of a colder experience than this. i don't think the sun ever peeked through that day (it rarely does in the summer there), but i never forgot the music i heard there. they made me a fan for life that day, and i followed the band as i could though out the san francisco area. i live in san diego now, and they rarely head my way down here.
anyway, the beach chalet is a surf music paradise, and if you're in san francisco make sure you make it one of your stops. overlooking ocean beach at the end of golden gate park, i can't see there ever being a better place to showcase surf music. i have never seen the shi-tones, and it being a gathering of friends to share the love of surf music, i don't know if it will ever happen down here. i can always wish!
since the shi-tones seem to be a gathering of friends from what i see offered here, there is a lot of people floating in and out wanting to play with each other and this makes for excellent one time events as different musicians show up to jam together.
this show however is just plain surf rockin' at its best. it's tight, it's perfect covers, no frills (just thrills). if i was to grab just one show, this would be it.
